Piracy prevails on the Internet

Pirated software and hacking web sites have rocketed in the last year increasing by 240%, according to Websense, an employee Internet management software company. There are now 5400 such sites accounting for 800,000 web pages.

Pirated software terms have also hit the top 15 most commonly typed phrases in search engines.

The increasing use of pirated software spells bad news for companies opening up the threat of hackers and viruses from corrupt software applications.

“The increased popularity in pirated web sites creates several problems for corporations,” said Andy Meyer, marketing vice president, Websense. “First, IT administrators lose control over employee desktops, meaning they waste help-desk resources trying to support programs unauthorised by the company. Second, employees can expose their companies to legal liability by copying illegal software. Finally, downloading these large software packages places an extra burden on the network, draining bandwidth that could be used for legitimate, work-related applications.”
