Dubai based Communications Security International (COMSEC) will be detailing its network and Internet security approach at Gitex 2001. The company, which aims to become the leading provider of total security Turnkey projects, offers a number of security solutions and consultancy.

One area of speciality is advice on virtual private networks (VPN) and, although the technology is currently rare in the Middle East, it is beginning to be used.

"VPN's are slow to market [in the Middle East]… a lot of this is to do with the ISPs and connection issues though," says Assad Haddad, managing director, Comsec.

The company is also well-versed in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and digital certificates. The latter has proved more popular in the local market thus far, explains Haddad. One reason for this is the fact that it is a complex solution that can take about 12 months to get up and running properly.

"[PKI] is very expensive — it can cost up to $1 million at times if installed properly — so there is no great take up in the Middle East. Instead, we are seeing digital certificates being used," he says.

In addition to being well versed in local security matters, the company is master distributor for Nokia, TopLayer, SonicwWALL & Keyware. As such it delivers a number of US and European security solutions to the Middle Eastern markets. The company also offers full support to other resellers of its security solutions throughout the region.
