CNN to launch Arabic Internet site

Internet site will be located in Dubai Media City (DMC). The Internet site is expected to play an integral role in enhancing the network’s fifth newsgathering bureau in the region, and service all of CNN’s 35 worldwide networks and services.

The Atlanta based Cable New Network (CNN) announced that it is expanding its Middle East operations by adding a local Arab news portal, CNNArabic.com. A daring initiative considering the existing presence of Al Jazeera.net, BBCArabic.com and various other Internet sites that are focused on the region.

Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, the new Internet site will be located in Dubai Media City (DMC). The Internet site is expected to play an integral role in enhancing the network’s fifth newsgathering bureau in the region, and service all of CNN’s 35 worldwide networks and services.

Operating in accordance of CNN’s editorial policy, CNNArabic.com and the newsgathering bureau will be operational by late 2001. “The development of an Arabic language website is in keeping with CNN’s determination and strategy to reach more users in their own language. This new website and the establishment of the news bureau complements CNN’s four other Middle Eastern operations located in Jerusalem, Beirut, Cairo and Baghdad and will further strengthen CNN’s newsgathering capabilities in the region, ” said Chris Cramer, president of CNN International Networks.
