Siemens IC Mobile Group wins preferred supplier status from Orascom Telecom

Siemens IC Mobile Group beats off strong competition from six rivals to win Orascom Telecom deal for the construction and extension of GSM mobile networks.

After a prolonged period of evaluation, Orascom Telecom is bringing in Siemens Information & Communication Mobile (IC Mobile) Group to help in the construction and extension of GSM mobile networks in the region.

The three-year contract secures IC Mobile Group as a preferred supplier to Orascom Telecom.

“Our choice of Siemens as one of our preferred suppliers is a result of a careful process of evaluation amongst seven companies initially invited to this tender,” said Orascom Telecom’s CEO, Jean Baptiste de Boissière.

Orascom invests approximately € 600 million per year in telecommunications infrastructure throughout the region. Considering Orascom's existing investments with multiple local GSM operators, the vendor believes this partnership will be significant.

Siemens and Orascom have recently collaborated to build the GSM network in Yemen and Syria.

“Orascom Telecom is one of our major customers in the emerging markets and this agreement puts another important milestone in our partnership. We are convinced that this partnership will bring the region on par with the worldwide GSM telecom market,” stated Lothar Pauly, board member with Siemens IC Mobile Group.
