Poacher turns gamekeeper

Lee Ashurst, the hacker who was found guilty and fined for attacking Etisalat's servers earlier in the year, is to speak at a security workshop in Dubai, to advise on protecting networks from hacker attacks.

Lee Ashurst, the Etisalat hacker, is to address security experts in Dubai. Ashurst, who was found guilty of misuse of telecommunications equipment in July, will speak to white hat hackers at the E-lert security workshop to be held at the end of September.

The conference, which is aimed at IT experts, will cover a range of issues on how to protect networks. Ashurst has become a ‘white hat’ hacker—a hacker who works with companies to test their networks for security holes—after being fined in one of the first criminal cases brought against hackers in the Middle East. He has since worked with banks and other leading companies in the region in his new role.

Ashurst said “E-lert will provide a unique guide to the holes and faults inherent in a wide variety of computer systems and networks. It’s the aim of the workshop to show how to go about fixing them as well as covering the entire spectrum of e-Security Problems from new techniques to cyber law and recourse.”

Trevor Punt, Managing Director of Bighat Media, the organisers of E-lert said: “With the increase of potentially lethal viruses attacking Middle East servers and users, as well as the escalating number of e-security cases, E-lert comes at a time when vulnerability of the World’s IT systems to the depredation of international cyber-criminals and hackers has never been greater. E-lert addresses the disparity between the knowledge of those who are behind the viruses and system penetrations and that of the specialists who need to protect their computers and networks.”
