Are Bill Gates and Larry Ellison about to visit Dubai?

Despite claims to the contrary, the heads of the biggest software companies in the world are not going to visit the Middle East in the near future.

In a piece of hype worthy of some of the biggest software companies in the world, Bill Gates and Larry Ellison are being lined up for a “heavyweight” showdown in the UAE. Organisers of the STARs Awards ceremony are advertising a clash between the heads of Microsoft and Oracle to take place in Dubai later this year.

The awards are intended to recognise achievements in technology over the past 20 years, but anyone hoping that ‘Bill vs Larry’ might signal a new twist in the database wars is likely to be disappointed.

“Bill Gates is not coming [to Dubai],” said Layth Dajani, public relations manager for Microsoft Gulf & Eastern Mediterranean.

Ayman Abousief, marketing director for Oracle MEA, added that Ellison was not likely to attend: “So far Larry has not confirmed, and I don’t think he will,” he said.
