Code Red for Microsoft

It seems even Microsoft’s attempts to shore up security threats are failing, after the vendor admitted its web site was hit by the Code Red virus, despite developing a patch for the problem over a month ago.

Microsoft is conducting an investigation into the security breach when hit a “small number of servers,” on July 19th.

The Code Red worm infects Microsoft web servers causing web sites to display messages including www.worm.com and ‘hacked by the Chinese.’ The worm then generates an IP address and spreads itself to other servers.

Although Microsoft released a patch, it obviously failed to cover the security holes, and by Friday an estimated 225,000 servers had been infected.

A full patch to plug the flaw is available at www.microsoft.com/technet/
