KACST adds ServerIron to network

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology, has added Foundry's ServerIron Internet web switch to its network set-up.

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology, has added Foundry's ServerIron Internet web switch to its network set-up. Multiple ServerIrons were added in both Riyadh and Jeddah to ease escalating Internet traffic overload and to increase service availability.

As the main ISP traffic gateway in Saudi Arabia, all of the country’s Internet traffic flows through KACST’s network. This meant that a solution that removed all load-balancing worries was required.
"We were looking for solutions for high speed Layer 4-7 switching,” says Dr. Ibrahim Al-Furaih, Internet Service Unit, KACST. “[By using ServerIron] we don't have to worry about load balancers any more, we are seeing a throughput up to 180 Mbps."

In addition to increasing performance and service availability, the solution had to be easy to install. According to Dr. Ibrahim, this was very much the case:

"One of our new graduates configured and set-up the box on his own. I think it was so simple and easy with the online Foundry manuals," he says.

"Our boxes are truly wire speed, non blocking, high performance switches that deliver up to 178 million packets per second throughput. This has been tested and acknowledged by third parties, and our major customers, such as KACST,” added Walid Al-Najjar, country manager, Foundry Networks.
