Etisalat hacker found guilty of telecomms misuse
Briton Lee Ashurst has been found guilty of misuse of telecommunications equipment belonging to the UAE's ISP, Etisalat
Lee Ashurst has been found guilty of hacking into Etisalat’s server last year. The Dubai court fined Ashurst, a 22 year old British man, $2,700 for misuse of telecommunications equipment, although he was cleared of another charge of opening other people’s emails, the BBC reports.
Ashurst will now face a civil case brought by Etisalat for lost revenues during the time that its servers were affected in June last year. Widespread disruption was caused to the Emirate’s only Internet service, leaving many users with no connection for days on end. Ashurst could face paying damages of hundreds of thousands of pounds in the civil case, although his lawyers say that they intend to appeal the criminal conviction.
