Omantel orders IP convergence technology
Oman's telecom provider has commissioned Siemens to deploy a broadband access network to serve growing demand for fast Internet access.
Omantel, the national network operator in the Sultanate of Oman, headquartered in the capital Muscat, has commissioned Siemens Information and Communication Networks Group (ICN) to evolve its network into a broadband-capable medium.
The integrated solution Attane hiA 7100 with ADSL technology from the Siemens ICN group will be used for broadband subscriber access. Omantel is building an ADSL broadband network using this technology to meet what is described as a growing need for high-speed Internet access.
The telco wants to market its broadband services to private households and customers such as banks, the Sultan Qaboos University and Petrol Development Oman. Omantel will use broadband internet access for applications such as e-commerce. Thanks to media gateways the network is relieved of its load, as traffic to the internet is routed as early as possible to the Unisphere ERX 1400 and on to the internet. The market for Fast Internet Access in Oman is expected to be between 5000 and 6000 new user connections in the next two years.
ICN will supply and install Surpass IP convergence technology and the Unisphere ERX 1400 edge routing switch from Siemens subsidiary Unisphere Networks. A network with ADSL broadband technology in combination with media gateways will be built country-wide, with installation to be completed as early as November 2001, Siemens said in a statement.
The broadband remote access server function (B-RAS) will be implemented using the ERX 1400 edge routing switch from Siemens subsidiary Unisphere Networks. Carrier Class Dial-in (Internet offload) is possible using Surpass hiG1000 for media gateways and Surpass hiQ9200 as a media gateway controller from ICN. This will relieve the narrowband PSTN network of broadband Internet traffic by injecting IP traffic directly into the broadband Internet, bypassing the classical telephone switching system.
