Intel unveils 1.7 GHz Pentium 4

Intel has released its latest Pentium 4 incarnation, the 1.7GHz processor, which is now the company’s highest performance desktop chip on the market.

Intel has released its latest Pentium 4 incarnation, the 1.7GHz processor, which is now the company’s highest performance desktop chip on the market. Intel said that it expects PC manufacturers worldwide to launch systems based on the new product very soon.

The new chip is likely to invigorate the debate between processor aficionados over whether AMD or Intel rules the performance roost. AMD’s fastest Athlon chip tops out at 1.3GHz, giving Intel a substantial margin in speed.

This gap looks likely to continue when Intel brings out its2GHz Pentium 4 and AMD releases 1.5 GHz and higher Athlons. While more speed boosts sales, it is only one measure of performance, and on many standard applications, Athlon outpaces the Pentium 4. The Pentium 4, however does better on video compression and many multimedia applications. The latest chip is available in 1000 unit quantities for $352.

In addition to announcing the release, Intel said that, as of April the 29th, it will cut prices on the Pentium 4. The price for the Pentium 4 running at 1.5 GHz will drop by 51 per cent to $256 and the 1.4GHz will fall by 49 per cent to $193.
