Change will be the only constant over next five years

Internet madness has only just begun according to visitors of ITP.net. The next five years will see more dramatic changes than the last five, they believe.

The collapse of dot.com and technology stocks last year has done little to derail the Middle East’s belief in the Internet’s power to change the world.

In fact, the vast majority of visitors to ITP.net believe that we have barely started to see the explosive changes the Internet may bring over the next five years.

In an ITP.net spot poll this week, only 18% of respondents voted for the following statement: "The Internet is overrated. It won't change everything. In the next five years, we'll see incremental advances in Net technology. But basically, what we see now is what we're going to get."

By comparison, 82% believe: “The Internet is still in its infancy. Over the next five years, we'll see enormous technological leaps that will make the Net more and more pervasive in our work and in our lives."

An identical poll run on the Web site of Smart Company magazine’s Web site in the USA found that even more people, 93%, believed the Internet was still in its infancy.

Keith Hammonds, an editor for Smart Company, said that the US result demonstrated people’s belief that change will be the only constant over the next five years. “Change has become hardwired into how we operate. If anything, the survey respondents may still be underestimating how rapidly change will take place. The hows and the whys may remain elusive. But these citizens of the new economy get it: Five years from now, we'll find ourselves someplace that's worlds away from where we are today. The extraordinary, they know, has become the norm,” he concluded.
