Sybase strengthens grip on mobile database market
Sybase says its integrated e-business suite gives developers and service providers all the tools they need to attack the Middle East mobile market.
Head-to-head database wars between Oracle, Informix and Sybase that peaked in the mid-nineties now seem like ancient history as each vendor has moved to sculpt differentiated strategies.
That effort is now paying-off for Sybase, which moved aggressively into the market for mobile e-business software solutions and databases. This led to a 61% market share in mobile databases for the vendor at the end of 1999.
Now Sybase is promoting its expertise in the Middle East; one of the fastest-growing mobile markets in the world. The company used last month’s Gitex exhibition to kick-start that process.
“Gitex was a very successful event for us to show our mobile solutions, with seminars held daily at the stand, and one-on-one presentations, a huge interest was shown by the visitors, and the feedback obtained shows the quality of business attendees and the mentality shown by the region,” said Dara Ibrahim, Sybase Products Middle East marketing co-ordinator.
The foundation of the integrated mobile solution is Sybase’s Enterprise Portal which, in conjunction with Sybase’s mobile database offering I-Anywhere, gives developers of wireless applications a comprehensive set of development tools, management, security and enterprise information integration capabilities to integrate mobile and pervasive enterprise systems.
“Using Sybase EP, organisations can rapidly implement an enterprise portal and deliver personalised information anywhere, anytime to its business constituents - customers, partners, suppliers and employees," says Ibrahim.
Wireless capabilities within Sybase Enterprise Portal will allow communication from enterprise portals to cellular phones, palmtops, alpha pagers, and other mobile and wireless devices using the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), and other protocols.
