New GSM operator enjoys stunning introduction
MobileCom stormed into the Jordanian mobile market in September with unprecedented first week sales adding pressure on former monopoly, FastLink.
Jordan’s new GSM communications partner, MobileCom has exploded into the Kingdom’s market sparking a mobile-frenzy amongst the population.
MobileCom attracted 20,000 customers in its first week, gaining about 10% of the total market. The flurry of new subscribers has been generated by the entry of MobileCom into the mark which has driven down prices, not just by MobileCom, but by their competitor, Fastlink as well.
The unprecedented success of MobileCom’s first week of trading, far exceeded even their CEO’s expectations. Jean-Luc Vuillemin had told Arabian Business.com in September’s issue that he aimed to attract between 25,000-40,000 customers by the end of the year. But the current figures suggest MobileCom’s customer base will far exceed those figures long before the year is out.
“MobileCom has fulfilled its promise to Jordan by introducing new value to the market with price and service offerings that have broken down barriers to entry and permit more Jordanians to benefit from mobile communications capabilities,” said Vuillemin. “With over 20,000 customers in the first week of operation, MobileCom has achieved a 10% market share of the total GSM market. The support of Jordanians is the driving force behind this.”
MobileCom’s success in generating such huge demand in such a short space of time demonstrates the huge latent potential for the Jordanian market that wasn’t being penetrated under the former monopoly. This demand explosion should serve as a lesson to other countries in the region that still operate monopolies.
