An Egyptian student’s Web site has been chosen from over 1100 entries from around the world as a semi-finalist in the ThinkQuest Internet Challenge. The overall prize fund for the winning sites is over $1 million in scholarships and cash.

Mohamed Kamal El-Zohairy, from Abbas El-Akkad Experimental School, teamed with Emily Boyd (Australia) and Helen Cheng (USA), to create an educational Web site called “Forces of Nature”.

The site provides information regarding earth science, geology, 15 common disasters, plus it provides guidelines and tips for event prediction, preparation, and prevention.

ThinkQuest’s Web-based learning challenge for students aged 12 to 19, is to create Internet sites about a topic of their choice in one of five categories including Arts & Literature, Science & Mathematics, Social Sciences, Sports & Health and an Interdisciplinary focus. The students work in teams developing their websites with the assistance of a coach, usually a teacher.

The Internet Society conducts judging for the entire competition. Each of the teams are not only judged on selecting accurate content and implementing a unique approach, but are assessed on their collaborative process, and leveraging the unique skills of each team member. Teams selected as semi-finalists demonstrate effective idea development by using the Internet as their means of collaboration. The semi-finalist teams will be narrowed down to finalists, next month. The winners will be announced at the Awards Event in Cairo, Egypt.
