Egypt wins bid to host 2001 ITU telecoms exhibition
ITU's Middle East and Arab States 2001 Telecoms conference and exhibition will take place in May next year at the Cairo International Conference Centre.
Egypt will host the Arab world’s mega telecom event next year, staged by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The UN body’s secretary general Yoshio Utsumi signed the agreement with Egypt yesterday (Friday).
A number of countries in the region wanted to host the Middle East and Arab States 2001 show and the ITU says, “it was not therefore easy to decide on the venue.
However, “taking into account the particular considerations of infrastructure, accommodation, transport and conference and exhibition facilities, Yoshio Utsumi accepted the offer of the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt to host the event.”
Mrs Fayza Aboulnaga, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations who signed the agreement on behalf of Egypt said the event is going to benefit the whole region. "I feel sure that Middle East and Arab States 2001 will enhance prospects for all of us to develop telecommunications and to act as a catalyst to speed up our social and economic progress," she said.
Middle East and Arab States 2001 will be held from Monday 7 to Thursday 10 May 2001 at the Cairo International Conference Centre. ITU says the venue is ideally located and offers advanced exhibition and forum facilities. It was previously used by the ITU to stage the highly successful Africa Telecom 94 event.”
The event will be the ITU’s 24th TELECOM event since World TELECOM was first held in Geneva in 1971.
The Cairo exhibition says ITU, will feature an impressive range of telecommunications-related products and services, while the associated forum will focus on the latest telecommunication developments and growth and will provide a platform for telecommunication leaders to share their ideas on future trends and discuss appropriate strategies for the developing as well as the industrialised world.
After the event, ITU will organise the fifth regional telecom event for Africa. Africa 2001 will be hosted by the Government of the Republic of South Africa and will be staged from 12 to 16 November. Regional events will also take place in America and Asia. Completing the round of regional shows, the next ITU Telecom World show is slated for October 2003 at Palexpo in Geneva. It is the most authoritative telecom event in the world.
