Dell launches online retailing in Saudi

Dell’s local partner in Saudi Arabia, Al Alamiah, has brought the country inline with Dell’s strategy for the rest of the world, with the launch of an online configuration and ordering system for the Kingdom.

Dell has gone live with an online ordering system with its local partner in Saudi Arabia, Al Alamiah. The site, www.dell.com.sa, is targetted at the small-to-medium enterprise market, and allows businesses to configure and order PCs online.

The site was ‘soft’ launched two months ago, and has since attracted nearly 1 million Saudi Riyals of business and shipped 70 machines. Visitors to the site, which is hosted in the UK, can configure and order PCs online. The order is then sent to Al Alamiah, who confirm payment details and then the order is assembled and shipped from the UK.

“The web site enables customers to get machines with the latest configuration,” explained Sami Said, executive director, Al Alamiah. “The machines in our showrooms are going to be older, but if the customer wants the latest configuration then they can get it from the web site.”

Al Alamiah is working to overcome the usual regional problem associated with e-business – the lack of street addresses. “We’re going to work on this,” Said commented. “It’s easy to deliver to corporations or other businesses, but [for houses] we will have the machine delivered to our nearest showroom and the customer can come and collect it.”

The site will be officially launched this month, but Said has not finished with its development yet. “We’ve been making sure that the site runs very smoothly. Now we’ve got a big drive planned for the site. We’re planning to Arabise the site within the next month and a half.”
