MidEastOnLine links into C1s Global Trading Web

Anwar Fancy explains how MidEastOnLine’s customers will be able to interface with Commerce One’s global network of B2B markets.

In the New Economy, it’s not uncommon for companies to be both competitors and partners at the same time.

So it now is with MidEastOnLine (MEOL) and Commerce One Middle East (C1ME), rival regional operators of business to business (B2B) marketplaces.

The two companies have struck a deal to supply MEOL with Commerce One’s BuySite software. This will allow businesses that use MEOL’s marketplace to also begin trading on Commerce One’s Global Trading Web, a global network of B2B marketplaces known individually as MarketSites.

Anwar Fancy, executive board director, MEOL, said there are two reasons behind the move: publicity and the chance to join a large existing global trading network. “Commerce One has a good profile here and we really wanted to piggyback off that,” explains Fancy. “You need a good name to develop credibility, especially when you’re a startup like we are.”

The first MarketSite that MEOL will connect to is marketsite.net, which has 700-800 suppliers on it. A Singapore MarketSite will follow and India is in the pipeline.

Fancy explained that MEOL’s strategy is very much to focus on small/medium enterprises. He aims to sign up around a thousand regionally, charging them a flat fee of $500 per month for membership. “We think the value proposition for them to buy over the Internet is fantastic,” says Fancy.

Beyond subscriptions, MEOL will look to make additional profits from value added services like secure document transmission and insurance. MEOL is being promoted to companies through local sales partners and chambers of commerce.
