Motorola adds credit card reader to new mobile phone

Combining credit card and mobile phone will allow customers to make secure online transactions on any WAP site, says the company.

Motorola has added a credit card reader to its latest WAP-enabled mobile phone.

The Timeport P7389-e will allow people on the move to make transactions on WAP sites with additional security because the credit card and handset will not work together without a security pin code. In addition, users will be able to instantly move money from bank accounts onto the credit card via the mobile phone.

"The new Motorola Timeport is a technological breakthrough that will create new waves in this era of e-commerce," said Patrick Mulligan, area director, Middle East, for Motorola.

"It can deliver the e-commerce revolution to the palm of you hand," he added.

The P7389-e incorporates the WAP 1.1 microbrowser, weighs 124 grammes with a standard lithium ion battery and allows up to 210 minutes minutes of talk time between charges.

The phone is expected to be introduced in the Middle East towards the end of this year.
