In a move that takes Alcatel a step closer to launching the regions first, true third generation technology platform, it has teamed up with Etisalat and announced trials of a full scale GPRS network.

Due to run in the third quarter of this year, the trial will test a range of high-speed data applications. The purpose of the trial is to give Etisalat the chance to experience GPRS, data and IP services under realistic conditions.

Alcatel will bring its knowledge of GPRS end-to-end solutions to the deal. This includes the necessary radio core network infrastructure as well as a range of WAP and GPRS compatible handsets. The trial platform will emulate a real consumer network, with tests made to judge traffic control and market acceptance.

Momentous Move

Analysts have described the move by Alcatel as momentous, into what could be the future of mobile communications. Pierre Tournassoud, Vice-president of Alcatel's mobile switching activities, said, "The Alcatel GPRS solution is now at deployment level, opening up the way for the mobile Internet. Our strategic relationship with Etisalat will allow their subscribers to fully benefit from the best of both the Internet and the mobile worlds."

The Alcatel GPRS system will provide end-to-end packet-switched mobile Internet data at a rate of up to 115kbps. This is an increase of 10 times over current GSM rates.

Alcatel's GPRS solution is designed to operate in multi-vendor environments and, if successful, could be implemented in a GSM network such as the UAE. Though the move to GPRS could be conducted with a simple software upgrade, users will require new handsets to beneit from the change.
