Palm prepares to surf

The complete range of Palm Pilots will be made Internet ready by the end of the year, according to CEO Carl Yankowski.

The complete range of Palm Pilots will be made Internet ready by the end of the year, according to CEO Carl Yankowski. Yankowski promised Palm users that a wireless clip-on device would make any Palm, old or new, capable of surfing the web.

Palm are testing Bluetooth technology at the moment, but whether the clip-on module will be Bluetooth enabled is being kept secret.

The current processor in Palm handhelds, the Motorola Dragonball is about to be replaced in an effore to pump more power into the pilot.

The replacement is an ARM designed chip that is manufactured by Intel.
Palm itself is set to become a wireless provider service.

The company went public recently, and the move is seen as much to pacify investors who are concerned at the Pocket PC initiative as by the need for Palm to get wireless.

Yankowski was speaking to a meeting of investors in New York.

Palm is also in talks with Sony of a potential collaboration on smart phone technology.
