Microsoft released Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me) to manufacture this month, and expects it to hit the consumer channel in September.

Microsoft released Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me) to manufacture this month, and expects it to hit the consumer channel in September.

The new operating system is aimed specifically at consumers and includes new features, which Microsoft has described as ‘PC health,’ ‘digital media,’ home networking, and ‘the online experience.’

“Windows Me will simplify the PC experience for first-time users while adding exciting new features and capabilities for existing PC users, giving them the option of a wide range of new home-computing scenarios,” said Bahram Mohazzebi, general manager of Microsoft GEM.

“Windows Me supports our goal to evolve the Windows-based PC to continue to provide a rich and exciting user experience in the connected home,” he added.

“Windows Me Arabic Edition will be released to manufacturing 45 days after the English edition,” said Mazen Shehadeh, product manager desktop application division.

“Home PC users are becoming a fast growing segment in the region and Windows Me brings these users the richness and convenience of the digital world to their homes. In addition, it brings Arabic language support to browse the growing volume of Arabic content in the Internet,” he added.

Me Specifics
The specifics of the new Windows Me features, according to Microsoft are:

PC health: Windows Me enables users to roll back their PC software configuration to a date or time when it was working properly, and contains a device called System File Protection, which prevents the accidental or unauthorised overwriting of critical systems files.
Digital media: Windows Me is better able to deal with images, video, and audio, which users may wish to input from their digital cameras and so on.
Home networking: Universal plug and play and simpler support for USB networking make networking the home an easier thing to do.
The Online Experience: Windows Me is designed around the desire of users to use the Internet and its multimedia content to its fullest extent.
