BI firm appoints regional manager, unveils latest BI package

Cognos unveiled a new performance management solution for staffing managers at Gitex this year, as well as announcing some staffing moves of its own. The business intelligence (BI) firm said that Derek Morrison will be its new regional general manager for the Middle East. Morrison, a former sales director for Cognos UK Commercial Sector, has been with the company since 2004, having also worked at a number of other software firms. He replaces David Brierley, who switched from Cognos to rival Business Objects in September this year.

“We have registered exponential growth in the region and, to support our operations, we are expanding our dedicated local presence in target markets,” said Graham Walter, vice president, Cognos UK, Middle East and South Africa.

“This includes bringing on high-level senior personnel to manage the region and we are confident that with Derek on board we will be able to offer higher levels of service to our customers,” he added.

Cognos used Gitex to unveil its new performance solution for workforce resource management for organisations using Cognos 8 Planning and Cognos 8 BI. The Cognos Workforce Resource Management Blueprint provides staffing managers with a web based planning processes and a visibility which allows them to forecast workforce requirements based on customer demand across the global scope of their organisation.

Using the solution staffing managers can easily determine headcount requirements and can set staffing effectiveness ratings by activity for each employee as well as a host of other activities relating to staff scheduling.

“Our Workforce Resource Management Performance Blueprint helps organisations take the first step towards linking financial and operational planning to improve resource allocation decision making,” said Morrison. “The blueprint’s best-practices provide service-based organisations with invaluable insight into the nature and timing of human capital requirements. This improved visibility enables companies to take related action that can simultaneous raise customer satisfaction, service levels and profitability.”

According to IDC, the total Gulf market for BI solutions is worth US$33million a year.
