NetApp claims new VTLs reduce costs

Network Appliance (NetApp) claims to have drastically reduced the cost of enterprise-class disk-to-disk backup with the release of its latest virtual tape libraries (VTLs) with hardware compression.

NetApp said the cost of disk-to-disk backup with any of its three VTLs introduced this month could be reduced by over 50% compared to similar solutions from rival vendors.

It claimed that, when data was compressed at 2-to-1 with either the NearStore VTL3000, VTL700 or VTL1400, customers achieved 50% savings.

When data was compressed at 3-to-1, customers achieved 67% savings at even higher performance.

The VTL3000, VTL700 and VTL1400 provide customers with the ability to increase backup and recovery service levels by doubling or tripling the amount of backup data that can be sto- red on disk, the vendor said, while also increasing VTL write- performance by over 50% compared to existing NetApp VTL systems.

With compression enabled, NetApp claimed, the VTL700 and VTL1400 deliver sustained write performance of 850 and 1,700Mbytes/s respectively, using data sets compressible at 2-to-1, the equivalent of over 6Tbytes per hour for a fully configured system.

“Before today’s announcement, customers had to choose between reduced performance with software compression, or opting for no software compression and spending more for disk-to-disk storage capacity,” commented Patrick Rogers, vice president of Products and Alliances at NetApp.

NetApp said the systems had been developed after identifying that meeting backup windows was an enterprise-class data centre’s number one backup pain point.

It stated customers also demanded the high- est levels of VTL write throughput as their storage needs grew and the backup window shrunk.

The VTL systems emulate physical tape libraries, storing large capacities of backup data on disk and automatically copying data directly to physical tape under backup application control to protect data for any open system storage environment.

NetApp said its professional services provided the expertise and technical capabilities to rapidly design and implement VTL solutions.

“Regardless of complexity, customers look for a seamless transition to new technologies. NetApp professional services assist customers in developing a well-documented design and detailed implementation plan based on tested and proven methodologies and best practices,” the vendor said.
