Geek of the week

The clamour for web-based television has resulted in some odd bedfellows.

Take US Senator Al Gore, who has hitched a ride with the Rupert Murdoch owned satellite pay-TV giant BskyB for a UK version of his network,Current TV.

Gore, the archetypal liberal, declared that the opportunities for his hybrid TV and web-based format within BSkyB family, far transcended political ideology.

A third of the network’s content is created by and made for the 18-34 age group, with schedules referred to as ‘pods’ and averages four minutes.

“It’s not political, it’s not ideological. You get a cornucopia of views,” he claimed.

“The quality and the intensity and the fascination level of the pieces individuals are making has exceeded our high expectations,” he added.

Gore also sees the deal as being the start of a rollout across the globe for his channel.

We await CurrentTV’s debut in the region with interest.
