TrendMicro flies InterCloud to tackle bots

Solution aims to help large networks clean up infections

Trend Micro has launched a new security service to tackle botnet activity aimed at large network providers.

Botnets are networks of compromised PCs that can be remotely controlled by an attacker and used en masse to launch denial of service attacks or to distribute spam, carry out identity theft via phishing or take part in click fraud.

The InterCloud Security Service is able to identify botnet activity and gives customers the ability to quarantine and clean bot-infected PCs.

It is aimed at those running large networks such as internet service providers (ISPs) and universities. “Up to this point, ISPs have been largely at the mercy of botnet activity robbing them of network resources and threatening the welfare of consumers and businesses daily,” said Dave Rand, chief technology officer of Internet Content Security, Trend Micro.

“With the release of this service and the bot-expert resources devoted to it, Trend Micro offers service providers and large institutions the first botnet mitigation solution from a trusted name in security.”

Because bots are specifically designed to avoid detection through pattern matching Trend Micro’s solution relies on patent pending behavioral analysis technology known as Behavioral Analysis Security Engine (BASE).

This technology analyses aggregated application and network infrastructure data to detect botnet-related behaviour.

This way the Intercloud solution can identify and isolate bots in real time, preventing them from initiating attacks or spreading infection.

Customers who purchase the solution will also receive access to a service delivery platform that provides timely threat intelligence and security updates from Trend Micro’s Bot Identification Team — a global network of security specialists who monitor bot activity and investigate bot distribution mechanisms.

A web-based management portal also provides administrators with a holistic view of network bot activity and enables centralised management of policies and updates as well as customisable reports on recent violations of policies.

The solution will be available worldwide during the fourth quarter of 2006 and will be sold through Trend Micro’s channel partners.

Trend Micro has its headquarters in Tokyo and has operations in over 30 countries.
