i2 boosts retail presence in Dubai and Saudi Arabia

DUBAI-BASED mobile handset distributor and retailer i2 has continued its aggressive Middle East expansion strategy, opening five new stores across the region in the past month.

The retail rollout consisted of four simultaneous store openings in Saudi Arabia and an additional outlet in Dubai.

“Within the next fiscal year we will not only strengthen our retail network across the region, but also penetrate new markets,” declared Yasser Zaidan, executive vice president of i2. “Within the UAE, i2’s role as a retailer is becoming more widely known which is why we wanted to reinvigorate our retail concept, starting with the new outlet located on [Dubai’s] Sheikh Zayed Road.”

In addition to the new store located in Tower One, i2’s retail network in Dubai consists of standalone stores located on Naif Road and Airport Road, outlets in Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and American University of Dubai, and store-in-store shops in CompuMe Garhoud, and Mall of the Emirates.

“We believe that opening our first stand-alone outlet in such a prime location, will give our customers even greater choice and much better access to those existing benefits,” said Jihad El Eit, vice president of Marketing at i2. “We have already invested a great deal in our promotional activities, tie-ups and other value added services and this is just the start of a much bigger plan.”

Meanwhile, the new Saudi Arabian stores bring to 111 the number of outlets operated by i2 across the Kingdom.

In other news, i2 has finalised the acquisition of UK-based GSM handset distributor Allied TC.

The acquisition of Allied TC follows i2’s recent purchase of Cellempower, a value-added services and mobile marketing company.

I2 president Abdul Hameed Al Sunaid claimed that “by acquiring Allied, [i2] will surpass the12 million mark in terms of handset sales by end of 2007”.
