Microsoft last month released a new add-on for Windows XP, only to withdraw it again in response to corporate users who complained that the ‘Private Folder’ for Windows XP could cause network administrators strife.

Billed by Microsoft as a “useful tool for you to protect your private data when your friends, colleagues, kids or other people share your PC or account,” Private Folder 1.0 appeared on Microsoft’s website as a Windows Genuine Advantage add-on program and enabled users to create a folder called ‘My Private Folder’, which they could then password-protect.

However, no support for the tool was offered, which some bloggers suggested could lead to users forgetting their passwords, not being able to retrieve these and thus losing potentially important data.

Microsoft subsequently removed the application from its site.
