Qatari regulatory authority begins consultation on licences

The Supreme Council of Information and Communications Technology (ictQATAR) has begun a consultation period on the proposed public fixed and mobile licences in Qatar.

The Supreme Council of Information and Communications Technology (ictQATAR) has begun a consultation period on the proposed public fixed and mobile licences in Qatar.

The period for comments and views on the draft licence documents ends 1 July.

In a statement, the regulatory authority said it is currently reviewing applications from prospective mobile licensees and will announce a list of qualified candidates shortly.

The mobile licence application process will be launched in July, with the fixed licence process following soon after, it added.

The licensing process brings to an end the monopoly of state-owned Qtel on telecommunications services in Qatar, the last of six Gulf countries to open its telecom market to competition after the UAE awarded a second mobile licence last year.
