Aptec regroups its operations and relocates to new DIC headquarters

Regional distributor Aptec has restructured its operations, bringing together its subsidiaries from four different locations to one facility — the new headquarters it has established in Dubai Internet City (DIC).

Ali Baghdadi, Aptec CEO and president, said the firm planned to move into its new premises early this month after postponing its original moving date of September 28 because of delays with installation of cabling at the new site.

The new custom-built DIC facility will house all four Aptec subsidiaries: Aptec Distribution, Advanced Technology Services (ATS), Aptec Kiosk Services (AKS) and mobile distribution joint venture Brightec.

Previously, the subsidiaries in Dubai operated out of different locations.

In a statement, Baghdadi commented: “Establishing in DIC is a strategic move that enables us to be part of a vibrant community of global and regional ICT companies. The DIC community is rich with channel development opportunities and offers the ideal platform for expanding our growth both in the Middle East and the other markets we target.”

Channel reaction to Aptec’s decision to move to DIC has so far been mixed. The new location does underline Aptec’s credentials as a regional player and increase its ability to interact with key vendors, but it also

distances it from the local IT trading community on Computer Street in Dubai, a group with which Aptec has always enjoyed good relations.

Major Dubai distribution houses including Redington, Almasa, Tech Data, FDC, Comtronix, Logicom and Golden Systems all still maintain points of presence close to Computer Street. Other distributors already working out of DIC include Mindware and Asbis plus a string of specialist value-added distributors.

Aptec currently has more than 400 staff across 40 countries in the region. Its product portfolio includes Acer, IBM, Lenovo, HP, 3Com, CA, Microsoft, Symantec, McAfee and Sun.
