SITA to undertake upgrade for Saudi Arabian Airlines

SITA has been appointed by Saudi Arabian Airlines to carry out a major technology upgrade in a contract worth US$4.1million.

SITA, a provider of IT business solutions and communications services to the airline industry, is to equip the airline company with a fully-managed global desktop service and modernise its telecommunications infrastructure.

“SITA DesktopSelect will provide Saudi Arabian Airlines with a fully-managed global desktop service over a new IP [internet protocol] network infrastructure,” said Khaled Bin Abdallah Al Melhem, director general of Saudi Arabian Airlines.

“This will help us to reduce significantly the total cost of ownership of IT in line with our future goals and particularly the move towards privatisation.”

Under the five-year term of the contract, SITA’s service, called DesktopSelect, will be implemented in countries throughout the airline’s network including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Spain, the UK and USA.

DesktopSelect is described as a tailor-made solution developed to meet the unique needs of a distributed outstation environment such as that found in Saudi Arabian Airlines.

It allows for standardisations of the outstation computing environments, removing barriers to the completion of IP migration and replacement of legacy equipment.

The contract, which covers a five-year period, includes an equipment refresh and comprehensive migration solution to the latest IP-based virtual private network (VPN) technology.

“DesktopSelect will provide Saudi Arabian Airlines with an end-to-end solution with predictable infrastructure costs and a service level agreement underpinning a robust IT infrastructure.

It will also allow for consistent access to head office applications,” said Hani El Assaad, regional vice president, SITA Middle East & Turkey.

He added that first phase of the project will tackle 70 locations across 13 countries with roll-out to additional locations to follow.

Sita is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and covers 220 countries in total.
