The American University in Cairo has teamed with Nortel and Symantec on the construction of a new campus.

Sami Akabawi, associate vice president for computing at the university, told IT Weekly the multi-million dollar project, which will be located in New Cairo approximately 40 kilometres from the old campus, would have a state-of-the-art IT infrastructure, including connectivity to all buildings, advanced connectivity to the internet, RFID and smart classrooms.

The university said it was working with various technology partners on the development, bringing in Nortel as its network component partner and Symantec to provide the security infrastructure.

"It is a very elaborate plan that will put the university at the forefront of the implementation of IT in the educative setting," Akabawi said, adding that the campus "will be the most advanced technologically speaking in the region and will compete even with some universities in the US."

The new campus, referred to as the City for Learning, is scheduled to be ready for use by autumn 2008.

The university has still to contract out its video conferencing equipment and would be doing this in the next few months, Akabawi revealed.

He declined to disclose the budget for individual components of the project, but said the budget for the entire IT side of the project was approximately US$15million.

The majority of students at the university are expected to relocate to the new campus on completion of the project, although the old one will still be used for the school of continuing education and some graduate studies.

The total cost for the City for Learning development is around US$400million.
