Why digital is driving force for IT industry

When even the CEO of a seemingly staid old-school company such as Cisco starts enthusing about the potential of the consumer digital market, you know that something is up.

But that is just what happened this week, with John Chambers telling delegates at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, US, that in three years time just 20 homes networked together could generate more load than the entire internet did in 1995. “This is what gets a networking person excited,” he claimed.

The growth in digital content is spurring interest in all sectors; Craig Barrett, chairman of Intel, recently told IT Weekly in an exclusive interview that the digital home market is the most exciting sector for the firm.

Meanwhile our lead story this week is the long-awaited launch of Apple’s iPhone — a device that Apple CEO Steve Jobs is declaring will reinvent the phone itself, thanks to how it handles digital content.
