Employees at Microsoft and IBM are anxious to find out if there is any truth behind the rumours that thousands are expected to be made redundant.

Microsoft has so far remained silent on how the current economic crisis has affected the company, but many expect that situation to change on January 15th.

Rumours are doing the rounds in prominent tech circles such as CNET that Microsoft could cut as much as 17% of its global workforce, trimming down its 90,000 employee base by 15,000.

IBM is also expected to follow suit.

A message posted on an independent website for IBM employees – Alliance@IBM – states that 16,000 employees out of nearly 386,000 will be laid off worldwide. The announcement is expected to be made by January 23rd as the company prepares its 2008 fourth-quarter earnings.

itp.net
contacted both IBM and Microsoft in the Middle East to find out if the redundancies would be effective in this Gulf but both declined to comment.
