Windows 7 beta leaks onto web

Microsoft has released some code and details of Windows 7, but the public beta is not expected to be opened until January.

A beta version of Microsoft’s Windows 7, the successor to the Windows Vista operating system, has been leaked onto a number of popular bit torrent sites.

The beta, which is not due for public release until sometime early next year, has been appearing with increasing frequency on file sharing sites like Pirate Bay.

Pirate Bay currently lists nearly 5,000 seeds, or computers hosting the download, for Windows 7 Build 7000, confirmed by Microsoft as an official beta for the 32-bit version of Windows 7.

A pre-beta version was released to developers in November, although it is not clear how this full version, came to be online.

The beta includes watermarks and a 30 day time limit, although many download sites also include tools to workaround or disable these features.

Possible deliberate attempt by Microsoft
Posted by SAM Ghauri, London, UK on 5 January 2009 at 00:34 UAE time

Microsoft is known to pre-release its beta software and launch road shows even when the product is months away from being released into the market. In one case it was years away. Microsoft followed this strategy at the time of Windows NT product release to undermine IBM's OS2 Operating system, where as for years NT was unstable and was support by releasing seven service packs. Windows 95, Windows 98, every year a new operating system release!! Now we guess the threat to Microsoft is Open Source.
