BREAKING NEWS :

nVidia’s CUDA gains software support

By Jason Saundalkar on Monday, September 29, 2008

Support for nVidia’s Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) is gradually increasing. Software firms Adobe and Cyberlink both recently announced that some of their latest applications will take advantage of CUDA compatible nVidia GPUs.

CUDA is a compiler, as well as a set of development tools, that allows software developers to create programs that can use a GPU’s processing power to process code. The GeForce 8 line onwards along with the Quadro and Tesla series of GPUs support CUDA.

Adobe has announced that its new Creative Suite 4 is CUDA compatible and would be accelerated when used with a compatible GPU. The suite comprises Acrobat 9, After Effects, Contribute, Dreamweaver, Flash, Encore, Fireworks, InDesign, Illustrator, OnLocation, Premiere Pro, Photoshop and Soundbooth.

Audio/video software firm Cyberlink has announced that it is working with nVidia to enable CUDA support on its newest audio/video editing package. The firm claims CUDA will make it possible to edit HD video far quicker.

CUDA is also being used by distributed computing projects such as Folding@Home, which share workloads across computers connected to the Internet.
