Following its acquisition of Bayanat in May, Mobily has rolled out Saudi Arabia’s first WiMAX service for domestic subscribers.

Offering speeds of up to 2 Mbps, the first phase of Mobily's broadband @ home service will cover the four major cities of Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Khobar. WiMAX will eventually be available across the Kingdom.

New subscribers to the service won’t need to pay activation charges and will receive the WiMAX plug-and-play modem for free in celebration of the holy month of Ramadan. For more details on the offer, visit the Mobily webpage.

According to reports by Bloomberg published on livemint.com, Mobily bought Bayanat Al-Oula, a local company that’s licensed to offer WiMAX services, in a deal worth SR 1.5 billion.

The telecom operator is expected to broaden its portfolio with similar products and services in the near future.
