The new Vostro basic products target small businesses, government and educational institutions.

Dell has introduced new Vostro laptops and desktops, delivering on their assurance of new products designed especially for the emerging markets.

Targeting small businesses, as well as government and educational institutions, two new Vostro laptops, A860 and A840, and two deskstops, A180 and A100, have been launched.

Both the 15.6 inch Dell Vostro A860 and 14.1 inch Vostro A840 are powered with Intel Celeron, and feature a standard 1GB memory with upgrade options. The laptops support a choice of Ubuntu Linux OS and Microsoft Windows Vista, with WiFi connectivity and optional Bluetooth capabilities.

While no specific pricing was available for the Middle East, the Vostro notebooks will cost upwards of $429, excluding VAT or customs charges.

The Dell Vostro A180 and A100 desktops are both powered with Intel Celeron and the Atom processor, with a hard drive of up to 160GB. While the A180 gives users a choice of operating systems between Linux and Windows, the A100 is only available with the Ubuntu Linux OS.

All four products are part of the new Vostro basic range, complementing the three notebooks and three desktops that currently exist in the Vostro mainstream range.

In what the company calls the ‘dawn of the connected era’, the products respond to consumer demand for effective technology at an affordable price. Speaking at a live webcast for the Vostro launch, Stephen J. Felice, senior vice president and president for Dell Asia-Pacific and Japan, commented that the price of notebooks has seen a 58% drop in the last ten years (1997 – 2007).

John Coulston, head of marketing in the Middle East, has confirmed to ITP.net that Dell plans to further expand both the Vostro and Latitude range in the coming months.
