By Mark Sutton on Monday, August 04, 2008

The Impulse NPX-9000 is the smallest and cheapest notebook on the market at present.

The Impulse NPX-9000 is the smallest and cheapest notebook on the market at present.

The self-proclaimed smallest and cheapest laptop in the world, Carapelli's Impulse NPX-9000 is now on sale in the Middle East.

Taiwanese hardware vendor Carapelli says that the Impulse NPX-9000 is both the smallest laptop in the world, and the cheapest, costing just $129 (AED 473) for bulk orders of 100 units or more.

In comparison, the cheapest commercially available small, cheap notebook the Asus EeePC 700 series costs anywhere from $200-400, while Intel's Classmate and the OLPC XO notebook, only available for governments and education,  costs between $250 and $400, and around $180 respectively.

With a 7 inch screen, the Impulse NPX-9000 matches the smallest Asus EeePC, and comes with a 400MHz processor, 128MB RAM and 1GB of flash storage, running a customized version of Linux.

A Windows XP version of the machine, which should cost under $200, is planned for the future.

Please do not go for cheap laptop in fact in Hyderabad (India) HP is using marketing tactics with false promises of free Internet facility. It is nothing but sheer marketing campaign to make money.

Go for branded quality always.

It is an excellent option to have such laptops that are economically priced, especially for people on limited budgets and students.

Looks like the XP version is already available if the photo is anything to go by. How much to buy a single XP unit and where can I get one from?

Editor's reply: The photo is of the Linux-based NPX-9000 which was tested by Windows Arabic magazine. The interface has been designed to look like Windows, but it is really Linux.
The Windows XP version is not yet available.
