AMD is taking market share from Intel over the long term, according to market research company iSuppli.

Figures from the California-based market research company show that while Intel gained revenue share in the first quarter of this year, AMD had increased its share in the long term, with around half of its gains made at the expense of Intel.

Intel gained 1.2% market share in Q1 of this year by revenue, although it was down by 0.7% from the same quarter last year. AMD dropped 1.1% in the first quarter, but was up 2.2% from Q1 07. The figures relate to revenue for the whole of the global microprocessor market, including X86, RISC and other processors.

Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst, compute platforms, for iSuppli commented: "Intel was the short-term winner in the first quarter microprocessor market. But over the previous twelve month period, the trend is reversed, with AMD growing its share.

"AMD's PC microprocessor product portfolio has become much stronger during the last year, particularly on the desktop side. Customers clearly are responding to AMD's moves. At the beginning of the year we saw AMD add the quad-core Phenom microprocessors to its desktop portfolio, which it has since built on with tri-core and dual-core flavours, for the pro-sumer and business markets," Wilkins added.
