Globacom extends infrastructure deal with Alcatel-Lucent

Alcatel-Lucent announced today it will work to extend the network capacity and performance of Globacom's fixed and mobile networks.

The Nigerian operator is looking to deliver advanced mobile and triple-play services, while improving its quality of service, as it makes an IP transformation of its network. Globacom hopes to increase its network capacity, which includes GSM/EDGE and W-CDMA/HSPA technologies, to support up to 35 million subscribers. The expansion covers radio access, Mobile NGN core network and microwave transmission, IP/MPLS and optical networking, fixed access networks, intelligent networks and value-added services.

The news comes months after Globacom narrowly avoided being fined by the Nigerian Communications Commission for service outages and network congestion. Celtel and MTN Nigeria were ordered by the regulator to pay out compensation to its mobile customers in the form of free air-time credit. Nigeria, being the most populous country in Africa, is often touted as the most significant market in the sub-Saharan region, with considerable investment opportunities for regional telcos.
