Game controllers

By Jason Saundalkar & Cleona Godinho on Monday, March 24, 2008

Gamepads and joysticks excel at making games easier and more enjoyable, so read on as WINDOWS highlights the gadgets of the moment...

Logitech ChillStream

Logitech's ChillStream looks remarkably like Microsoft's Xbox 360 controller but it has an extra trick up its ergonomically designed sleeves. It features an integrated cooling system, which Logitech claims will ‘put the smackdown on sweat and keep your reaction time at its peak'.

The ChillStream does this via a series of strategically placed cooling ducts that flow air over your fingers and palm, keeping your hands dry and better able to grip.

The system is also customisable, as we've come to expect from Logitech, meaning you can choose between running the cooler at intervals or continuously.

Microsoft Xbox 360 controller for Windows

Microsoft's Xbox 360 controller has proven very popular with gamers, so much so that some users actually modded their console controllers to work with their PCs' USB ports.

Now Microsoft has made it possible for every gamer to enjoy this controller by releasing a model that is both Xbox 360 and PC compatible out the box.

This is great for gamers because it means not having worry about getting used to two sets of controllers when shifting from platform-to-platform.

The controller itself is a carbon copy the original Xbox 360 model; it features the same comfortable, game-friendly shape and employs a 2.4GHz wireless signal to communicate with its host.

Genius MaxFighter F-31U vibration

Joysticks are great for flight and space simulator games and Genius' new MaxFighter F-31U is packed with features that'll make you feel like a real live pilot in quick time.

The joystick features a built-in motor that supplies Force Feedback, so you'll feel very real G-forces when pushing the envelope in your jet.

The MaxFighter also features throttle and rudder controls, which mean you can pilot your craft without needing to take your hands off the stick; great. You also get a ‘hat' switch which enables you to pan around the cockpit of your plane or ship; useful for when you're looking around for enemies.

And, when you've zeroed in on your target, there's a trigger button to finish the job.
