Navteq maps out plans

Satellite navigation developer Navteq has demonstrated its commitment to the Middle East region by launching its first Arabic-language PDA and mapping software at GITEX Technology Week.

The company, which holds the offficial rights to the Middle East's digital satellite mapping database, has developed the Gulf Way PDA in conjunction with partner Maction Mobile Technologies.

"Making Arabic-language handsets and PDAs available here is critical to creating mass market appeal for our products," says Navteq MENA general manager Dr Ghassan Freij.

The Gulf Way features full English and Arabic-language functionality and GCC mapping software that includes mosque locations and the Qibla.

The company opened a Dubai office last year, which has enabled it to gain a greater insight into the challenges facing the local market. "In Dubai, the vast majority of roads don't have names and that makes the need for satellite navigation even greater," notes Freij. "We have to regularly review our maps in the emirate due to the large number of construction projects and ongoing road developments."

Yiannis Moissidis, Navteq's VP of business development, EMEA, says: "Our maps conform to world-class standards, but they must be localised. The only way to create a mapping database for a specific city is to have residents using the software every day out on the road."

Navteq currently boasts 100% mapping coverage in Bahrain, Oman, UAE, Qatar and Kuwait and plans to expand its database to include Jordan and Turkey. Each map includes details such as freeway lane count, speed limits, building names, restaurants and other points of interest.

"GITEX is one of the largest technology shows in the world and as consumers rush to embrace technology, our involvement in the show becomes even more important to our business," says Moissidis.

Navteq is also showcasing its 3D navigation displays and pedestrian based mapping software at the show.
