Telindus Surveillance delivers 'intelligence'

Enhanced international security concerns are driving demand for large integrated surveillance systems, according to Telindus Surveillance Solutions vice president René Lathouwers.

"The solutions that we are building are really addressing the large installations that have more than 1000 cameras," he said.

"Once you have more than 1000 cameras, you need a special kind of ‘intelligence system' to monitor them. The trend we see is that the management of these strategic surveillance systems becomes very important - you need to get to a point where you can display and store information where and when you need it."

Lathouwers said that many contemporary systems were utilising different standards of equipment - from high-end zoom and move capable systems to rigid IP based scenery cameras - and needed a management system capable of integrating the combination of hardware levels.

"We can manage a combination of those [cameras]," he added.Pointing to the UK's NRTS (National Roads Services Telecommunications) project, which monitors the country's highway system through more than 4000 cameras, Lathouwers said Telindus worked with individual clients to deliver tailored surveillance solutions.

"What is very important [in that project] is that in the centre there is an umbrella management system that will not only keep track of the different cameras, it will also look into the management of road signs," he said.

"So you have a management system that is capable of interfacing with hierarchical data systems."

By providing system gateways, Telindus systems have been interfaced with third-party applications such as facial recognition and behavioral analysis to provide more comprehensive service levels.

The systems also utilise Centauri codecs to translate analogue recorded data into digital information for transferral across an IP network, for example.

"It means that the scalability of the networks becomes higher, and the ease of integration also increases, and of course, as you are using the IP network for several data sources you get an increased cost benefit," Lathouwers explained.
