Google is out with its own branded tablet, the Nexus 7, that it aims to put into market by mid-July.
The tablet will retail for $199 and take on a market dominated by the Apple iPad, Amazon Kindle Fire and Android clones.
Google's entry into the tablet market will coincide with the launch of Microsoft's Surface tablet. However, very little friction is expected amongst the two, considering that they are aimed at different segments of the market and will retail at different price points.
The Nexus 7 tablet built by and co-branded with Asus is one of several gadgets announced at Google's developer conference on Wednesday. Others included the Nexus Q, a device that allows users to stream content from an Android device to a TV, and Google glass.
Google's tablet will feature Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" software and will have a front-facing camera, 7-inch 1280x800 resolution screen, and an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor.
Chris Yerga, Google director of engineering for Android said: "Nexus 7 is an ideal device for reading books. The form factor and weight are just right."
