BICSI was founded in 1974 to serve telephone company building industry consultants (BIC's) responsible for the design and distribution of telecommunications wiring for commercial and multi-family buildings. As the industry expanded and converged, so did BICSI.

In 2004, the association's official focus changed from telecommunications to information transport systems (ITS) as a more accurate and all encompassing description. BICSI members and installers/technicians deal with systems and infrastructure that move information within a commercial building. That information can be audio, video, voice, data, electronic safety and security, environmental and building controls—anything with a unique Internet address.

BICSI now serves nearly 25,000 corporate and individual members, installers, and technicians in more than 100 countries.
