Seagate begins search

HDD vendor hunts for additional channel manager to drive partner development in the Gulf, Levant and Africa.

Hard disk drive giant Seagate is set to recruit a new channel manager to strengthen its business in the Middle East.

The new manager will work alongside current boss Ziad Abourahal to develop the vendor's partner network across the region. Seagate - which also owns the Maxtor brand - intends to begin interviewing applicants for the post this month and is hopeful of having somebody in place by the end of April.

Abourahal has been with Seagate for two and a half years and works from Beirut where his new counterpart is also expected to be based. Gulfem Cakmakci, channel sales manager Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa at Seagate, explained: "Ziad has done a tremendous job and we're very happy with what he's doing and now we're going to have a second channel manager. We're going to split the region and we have identified three major markets: UAE, Saudi and Egypt. Ziad will continue to focus on these markets and the new manager will look after the rest."

The territory that the new recruit will oversee is understood to include the GCC, Levant, and large parts of Africa where Seagate is keen to build a stronger presence. The vendor disclosed that the new manager will be responsible for identifying and recruiting new partners. They will arrange and present Seagate roadshows and seminars across the region and provide training for partners' sales teams.

"80% of their time will be spent travelling and trying to find new opportunities," added Cakmakci. "We believe the person will be based in Beirut as Lebanese people speak three languages and French is essential for North Africa. This move will help us find the real customers in the channel. Ziad and the new manager will be the managers of the business in the Middle East. They will be in the heart of the market," she concluded.
