Networking giant Cisco is to acquire XML solutions firm Reactivity for US$135million in cash and options.

Reactivity develops XML gateways, which help enterprise customers to deploy, secure and accelerate XML and web services.

Cisco said the acquisition demonstrated its commitment to its expanding application networking services (ANS) advanced technology segment.

"Customers continue to validate our on-going strategy of building more application services on the network platform," said Jayshree Ullal, senior vice president of Cisco's Data Centre Switching and Security Technology Group. "Reactivity together with our application control engine provides a highly capable solution for customers' application delivery needs in the data centre."

The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of 2007. The deal is Cisco's third acquisition this year after its purchase of social networking solutions provider Five Across last month.
