Abu Dhabi's Zayed University is talking to four technology partners to help in setting up its open source lab.

Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with software vendor Novell to set up the lab last week, director of the Institute for Technological Innovation (ITI) at the university, Abdullah Abonamah, told IT Weekly that AMD and Sun Microsystems had also made a commitment to the project and IBM had made a "soft commitment".

Abonamah said the companies would provide a range of services including equipment, software and technical assistance to help in the development of the lab.

"The companies will be full technology partners. We expect that each will embrace the lab openly and contribute as much as they can," he commented.

IDCL, the governing body of the International Computer Driving License programme in the Gulf, said in a statement that it has also been selected as a partner for the open source lab project.
