Digital security firm Gemalto is supplying over 2.5 million ID card for Oman's national identity card programme.

The number is enough for almost the entire population of the Sultanate, which stands at around 2.8 million.

The firm, which has been selected by the government to assist with the second phase of the programme, is also updating the national registration system in Oman.

The ID card programme, which began in January 2004, is the first of its kind in the Middle East. Some 1.2 million citizens in Oman have started using a digital identification system that stores personal details such as name, address, digital photograph, fingerprints, and driving licence.
